Leeds Historical Society Celebrates 138th Birthday of the City of Leeds
The Leeds Historical Society hosted a joyful 138th Birthday Celebration of the City of Leeds on Sunday, April 27, 2025, at the historic Bass House, home of the Leeds Historical Society Museum. Over 60 attendees gathered on a beautiful spring afternoon to honor the city's incorporation in 1887 and to enjoy the museum’s displays, many visiting for the first time.

Guests were welcomed with light refreshments and a commemorative handout featuring highlights of the Society’s major projects and supporters for 2024–2025. Attendees learned about the Society’s ongoing initiatives, including historic tours, educational programs, upcoming exhibits, and the planned restoration of the Bass House’s 1905-era kitchen.
The Leeds Historical Society recognized the vital contributions of members, partners, and sponsors, including the City of Leeds, the Jefferson County Community Development Fund (sponsored by State Representative Susan DuBose), the Alabama Tourism Department, and the Leeds Water Works Board, among others. Partner organizations such as the Leeds Area Chamber of Commerce, Leeds Jane Culbreth Library, Leeds Main Street, and the Mid-South Chapter of the Railway and Locomotive Historical Society were also acknowledged for their ongoing support.
The Society’s upcoming events include participation in the Creekbank Festival with a special Stagecoach Exhibit (May 17), the Veterans of Leeds Tribute Exhibit at the Bass House (May 25), the Annual Meeting and Leeds History Film Debut (June 8), and the grand opening of the Birmingham Terminal Exhibit at the Depot (August 1–2).
The Leeds Historical Society remains committed to preserving the past and inspiring the future through restoration projects, museum exhibits, and community engagement. Thanks to strong community support, the Society has submitted multiple grant proposals to enhance its educational programming and preserve the Bass House Museum for generations to come.
